Thursday training wrapped up our Vehicle Rescue Refresher. With our hydraulic tools, battery and manual saws we removed the doors, roof, and pushed the dashboards of two vehicles.

We carry a full compliment of rescue tools and stabilizing equipment on the Engine and Rescue. These are utilized to extricate victims of vehicle crashes.

17 volunteers out for training tonight which was Night 1 of Vehicle Rescue Refresher. Tonight the focus was on stabilization Prior to us extricating victims, and placing rescue tools in service; we must stabilize the vehicle for patients and rescuer safety. Crews need to be able to stabilize a vehicle on all four tires, its side, its roof, or if the vehicle is laying on top of another object.

We carry several different tools to help us do that. We use wooden cribbing, chains, and Struts as options to secure a vehicle. Stay tuned for photos of next week, when we will remove the doors, windows, roof, dashboard, and much more.

Tonight the members received training on Autism and Emergency Services. The training covered many aspects of Autism and potential methods for us to provide better care and service. Service during a fire ,or medical emergency; even how we could best provide fire prevention education to this community.

The class also provided us with Sensory Kits that we placed on the apparatus to assist individuals who may not have access to their own tools, due to a fire or accident.

Tonight the department held our annual Airpack Confidence Course. We wear airpacks to enter hazardous environments to allow us to breath clean air from the breathing apparatus. The night starts with a written test describing all of the airpack components, a review of mayday procedures, and then we go through the confidence course. We measure time to complete the course, and the amount of air consumed - the drill is about ensuring confidence in the operation of the pack while pushing your body to its limits. There are 9 stations to the course which all are simulated firefighting activities.

Air management is critical. Our bottles under normal conditions provide 45 minutes of air. Imagine being in a fire, high heat, zero visibility, and doing all of the physicals tasks to extinguish a fire, or search a house. Being able to control your breathing and make that air last is the goal of the exercise.

The night after the big storm, and we had over 20 volunteers attend.
